Listening to Understand – Training Game


Listening closely to others can be difficult at times, particularly when we work in fast-paced environments with multiple distractions vying for our attention. This game helps to draw attention to many of these common challenges whilst focussing on developing your learner’s core listening skills.

Listening closely to others can be a challenge sometimes. Frequently, other things hinder our ability to give our full attention. This game will highlight many of these challenges, drawing attention to the impact this has on our understanding.

Group Size

  • Eight to ten

Listening to Understand Instructions

Explain to your group that they are going to play a game called ‘Listening to Understand’.

Split the group into two rows. Ask each row to line up, facing each other. Instruct the delegates in the left-hand side row to ask the person facing them, three questions:

  • What is a hobby of yours?
  • What was your first pet’s name?
  • What was the name of your first school?

The delegate opposite will answer, and then ask the same questions in reply.

Once the information has been shared, the left-hand row shifts down one, so they are all facing a new delegate. The person at the end of the row will join on to the other end, so they are also facing a new delegate.

The group will follow this process until everyone has shared information with every delegate.

Once complete, hand the delegates a blank sheet of paper to jot down as many answers they can recall for each person.
